Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Consultation

What is important to look for in EMDR consultation?

Consultation is a collaborative relationship between mental health clinicians in which the consultant reviews the consultee’s EMDR client case material and provides feedback to the consultee regarding their use of standard EMDR therapy with clients. The consultation is expected to be consultee-centered which means the focus is on the skills and knowledge of the consultee’s use of standard EMDR therapy with clients. The consultation should be structured in format and consultees are expected to provide examples of their clinical work as part of the consultation process. This may include video recordings, audio recordings, near verbatim transcripts, and/or EMDR case presentation

I want to become certified in EMDR therapy, what do I need to do?

Check out https://www.emdria.org/ to review the guidelines. I support you by reviewing each step needed to become EMDR certified. I answer your questions every step of the way and also keep track of the consultation hours to then provide you a letter of recommendation that is provided to EMDRIA upon the completion of your hours.

What questions should I ask before hiring an EMDR consultant?

It is important to ask about clinical experience, availability, consultation methods, is the consultation in person or online (virtual), and pricing. For example for me, my clinical experience is that I specialize in EMDR with children, adolescents, and adults, childhood trauma, inner child healing, attachment, and play therapy. Individual and group consultations are virtual. For individual consultation, please contact me to discuss availability in days. EMDR Group consultation is scheduled on Fridays virtually once a month from 10 am-12 pm. Pricing for Individuals is $150.00 per meeting. Pricing for Group is $75 for a 2-hour group.

What is the difference between consultation and supervision?

Consultation does not hold the same legal liability as supervision. In supervisory relationships, a clinical supervisor can be held liable for the clinical actions of their supervisee. In a consultant relationship, a consultant does not bear legal liability for the consultee. A consultee may enter into a contractual agreement with a consultant in which professional feedback is given to the consultee in an area agreed upon by both parties (ie: EMDR).

Why is EMDR consultation important?

The consultation focuses on the mastery and integration of standard EMDR therapy in practice. The consultant values the integrity and independence of the consultee. The intended purpose of the consultation is for the consultant to provide guidance and feedback to the consultee regarding their use of standard EMDR therapy with clients.

How do I prepare for EMDR consultation?

You arrive, take a breath, and enjoy the EMDR consultation journey! Be prepared to present case material while using a presentation format that supports case conceptualization. You will not need to provide me with any information that will identify the case you are presenting on the materials you share.

What is an EMDR Consultant in Training (CIT)?

Consultant in Training (CIT) is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist who has completed the CIT declaration process, upholds the terms and agreements and is actively working towards becoming an Approved Consultant. The CIT is expected to work with at least five different consultees, three of whom have already completed the EMDR basic training. The CIT can provide a maximum of 15 hours of consultation to any one single consultee who is working towards EMDRIA Certification.
